British supermodel Agyness Deyn starred in a short film The Right Side Of My Exultant Brain, co-written by her Five O’Clock Heroes band-mate Alanna Masterson.

Dustin Hoffman’s son Jake also has a part in the film and Aggy has since struck up a friendship with Dustin, who is said to be helping her forge a Hollywood career.

I added a string to Metacity (in trunk, of course, not for the stable release). If I can translate the string into two of the languages in po/ (cy and en_GB), should I just do the ordinary po-updating work and then translate that one string, and commit that, or should I go and ask the translation team first?

(I’m not exactly completely fluent in Welsh, but good enough to read most of the news; I can at least say “move the window to the centre of the screen”, especially if I already have “move the window to the left of the screen” translated.)

Groklaw: "What do I get from all this? SCO is frantic to get a final judgment, so it can file an appeal, and so it's trying to get all standing issues resolved."

A friend of Amy Winehouse has just revealed to the Sun the extend of Wino’s drug use.

Apparently Amy suffered two major overdoses, one of which may have left her brain damaged. She displayed symptoms normally associated with schizophrenia after a 36-hour pot marathon.

Crazy!!!

Doctors warned that one more overdose will probably kill her.

The friend revealed:

Amy’s first overdose in August last year was from cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, ketamine and crystal meth.

She was advised to see a psychiatrist after displaying “multiple personality traits” that made her a suicide risk.

Her second overdose was in July – when she inhaled an “inhuman” amount of hash that left her vomiting uncontrollably and hallucinating.

At the time her dad Mitch, 54, said it was a “bad reaction to her medication”.

A friend tells the Sun on Sunday: “The future is bleak, bleak, bleak. Mitch does everything he can to protect his daughter -but his ‘explanation’ for Amy’s hospital dash in July was just simply untrue. She had smoked an inhuman amount of hash which resulted in acute cannabis poisoning. You have to take a s***load of pot to suffer that severe a reaction. It’s thought she had been smoking it for 36 hours. Amy’s fits were as bad as the convulsions she had during her overdose in August last year. No one has mentioned her meth use before – but that stuff is truly nasty. She is in need of years of psychiatry and medical treatment if she has a hope.”

The future doesn’t look good for Wino.

We hope she’s trying hard to free herself from drug use.

Amy is next due to perform on Saturday at the Isle of Wight’s Festival.

We don’t think she will turn up.

There have been numerous questions regarding the recent open source release of VIA's 2D Xorg driver.

Why did VIA publish yet another driver, rather than improving any of the existing Xorg/openchrome/unichrome drivers?
Because this driver is all but new! It was the base for all the binary-only driver releases that VIA has made (and is still making) for select Linux distributions. So rather than having written a new driver, this is just the disclosure of an existing driver.

One of the commonly asked questions is _why_ not the complete source, including codec acceleration, TV out and 3D was published. I cannot disclose the particular reasons for VIA, sorry. But I can comment on the general reasons on why companies cannot disclose certain source code. As you may have noticed, the situation with regard to the ATI driver e.g. shows certain similarities.... Usually there are some parts of the code, particularly for the 3D driver, which cannot be disclosed due to either

  • parts of the source code are under a proprietary license from a 3rd party
  • parts of the source code refer to technologies (e.g. macrovision) which are subject to very strong NDA's by the licensor, which in turn prohibit the open documentation or distribution in source code form

Will VIA learn to build a community around that new driver? Will there be mailing lists and a public revision control system?
As of now, this is unlikely. Not because VIA doesn't believe in the community, but rather because the disclose of VIA's source now enables everyone involved to look at all the available drivers. Some consensus has to be found on which driver is best to be used as a base for a future Xorg mainline driver, and then the community and VIA can work together on merging bits from other drivers into that base. Creating VIA's own mailing lists (and community) would lead to more fragmentation, rather than unification.

This article will tell you how to install and use Webmin, a web user interface mainly used for administering servers. If you are not a sysadmin, don’t run away: Webmin can also be used on a single desktop too. You may struggle to remember all the command line operations to manage, say, run levels or various daemons and prefer to do it the GUI way. One of the best reasons for using Webmin is to circumvent the sheer number of command line variations from distro to distro and the different locations for configuration files that you would otherwise require to memorize (manpages notwithstanding). Please keep in mind that it is still essential to know how to use basic Unix commands. Using Webmin without some system literacy is just asking for trouble. It should be used as an additional tool, not a replacement—because a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. On that basis, let’s look at what Webmin modules can do for the desktop user.
Here are some of my favorites to get you ready for November 4th. As the AIGA puts it, “Good design makes choices clear.”

We GNOME translators can preview many of the new features because, well, we translate them. But today translating Orca proved even more useful: I discovered that Alt+F6 switches the focus do daughter windows. Now, that’s how you can focus a dialog after switching to another application and back to the application with the open dialog. (By the way, this keybinding is editable in the System→Preferences menu.) I just feel like when I read from Ross Burton how useful is middle-clicking a scroll bar.

Thank you, Orca developers. Besides writing well recognized software and excellent translator comments, you proved to be very instructive ;)
