LXer Feature: 31-Aug-2008

Happy Labor Day, hopefully you have an extra day off this weekend to relax and catch up on things, thus I present this week's LXer Roundup for your reading pleasure. This week we have 5 unpopular desktop environments, 25 killer Linux applications, 10 must have cheat sheets for those of you who are low on mental "RAM" (I know, its a groaner, but its all mine), in a new twist to the Apple-Psystar saga, Psystar claims they are going to counter sue Apple claiming anticompetitive business practices. A computer on the International Space Station gets infected with a 'worm' (guess what OS it was running?), Carla Schroder asks the question "Does attracting hordes of Windows users to your FOSS project benefit your project, or help the advancement of FOSS?" and to wrap things up I have a couple pieces of FUD I came across.

All aboard!

I spent some time this weekend at the OLPC Physics Game Jam. I teamed up with the legendary Nirav Patel and we made a bridge building game. The objective is to build a bridge and see if it survives after a train starts travelling across it.

We only have one level so far, but it is quite engaging and not as easy as it might sound. It was interesting to see some youngsters try it and experiment with different bridge structures during the review session. The game also features some top notch sound effects coordinated by Brian Jordan.

We won the gold prize for game development. To learn more and download it, see the Bridge page on the wiki.

It will play in you open after that the secondary bears of surgery instruct Lovie Smith has mark of defensive extremity previously said Anderson, that it has endured the surgery on its inch of right, is waits for in order to go against colts de Indianapolis in the night of Sunday opens of season.
Jacob is starting to learn about the world around him a little bit. He seems to have four categories of people: men, women, children, and babies. He can say "man" and "baby" pretty clearly. Earlier today, I heard Terah telling Jacob "Dad is a man. Mom is a woman."

Maybe an hour later, I walked into the kitchen. Jacob and Terah were there. Terah proudly asked Jacob, "What is dad?"

Without missing a beat, Jacob said "Fun!"

He must have seen me smile, because a second later, he added "Happy!"

Can't argue with that.

Jodie Foster pregnant?

| August 31st, 2008

Is Jodie Foster pregnant with her third child?

Jodie who split with her lesbian lover Cydney Bernard in May was spotted at a Los Angeles grocery store this weekend wearing a lose fitting purple sundress.

Unless the usually slim Jodie has been putting on weight, but isn’t that a small bump we’re seeing there?

I just finished the draft 3 of the open collaboration services specifications. I got a lot of input from developers and users so the new version is more RESTfull, better documented and has more features. At the moment the services PERSON, FRIEND, MESSAGE, ACTIVITY and CONTENT are specified.
The services are already implemented at all openDesktop.org sites like KDE-Look.org or KDE-Apps.org. So you can try them now if you like. I will work on the OpenID integration now.
I already got a message from a different project who wants to become an open collaboration services provider. This is great news.

Last week I participated at the openSUSE Hackweek in Nürnberg. And to together with Dirk and Cornelius and Sebastian we had a lot of great discussions and managed to implement some working proof of concept code for Akonadi and Plasma integration.

And to gether with Josefs LokaREST Library everything is coming together. Exiting Times.
Please send me a message if you have ideas, suggestions or want to help.

qemubuilder+distcc. I've been playing with regexp in C this morning. That sounds like a pretty remote step towards qemubuilder+distcc, but yes, it is.

Harald Welte, VIA's open source representative, states that the next step is to add 3D (see preview), TV-out, and hardware codec support while integrating this work with existing open source projects. VIA has pre-installed Linux on a significant portion of the company's latest products, including the EVEREX gPC2, 15.4" gBook, and CloudBook. It has also helped port the open source CoreBoot BIOS (previously LinuxBIOS) to several of its motherboards." VIA seems to be making good on the promise of its open source initiative announced last April.
